Top five things to think about when planning a kids' birthday party

Kids' parties can often feel like more trouble than they’re worth but we love them all the same. You just can’t beat the feeling of seeing the look of delight on your child’s face when they see the party take shape. To help you throw a stress-free and fun party (which everyone will enjoy), we’ve rounded up the top five things you need to think about when planning a kids' party.

1 - Venue. Whether you choose to host it at your own home, in a local community center or even outside, deciding on a party location and venue should be a top priority. The space you choose for your party will inform lots of other important decisions like the number of guests and whether you want a theme, so it really does need to be a focus. We say get the venue sorted and take it from there!

2 - Invites. Guest lists for any party are tricky but they can be doubly so when you are planning a kids' event. You’ll need to factor in whether you want to invite parents to stay and join in the fun or whether you are happily entertaining their kids by yourself. Additional guests can stretch the budget but having other mums and dads there may help to alleviate stress as you’ll have some extra pairs of hands to make sure everything runs smoothly.

3 - Entertainment. Undoubtedly the most important aspect of any kid’s party - no one wants a bunch of bored kids on their hands after all! With so many options available, from high-end children’s entertainers like Sharky and George to booking in for an activity-filled afternoon at your local leisure center, it’s really a case of working out your budget and taking it from there.

4 - Catering. Food at any party is an important element but at a kids' party, it’s not the highlight. Feeding other people’s children can be quite stressful, especially if you have fussy eaters so there's no need to lay on a lavish spread at huge expense. Our advice? Keep it small and simple, discuss any allergies with parents in advance to avoid a last-minute panic and offer savory, sweet and healthy options. Of course, if you booked a venue they may be able to sort out all your catering requirements for you, in which case that’s one thing off your mind.

5 - Cake. Custom made, shop bought or home-baked, it really doesn’t matter, all that matters is that you don’t forget it on the day as no party is complete without a cake (just don't forget the candles and matches!).
